I am now certain that all the vampire romances have it all wrong. They always paint a romantic image of the handsome vampire drinking from his lovely victim that he will fall in love with. Reality check..a man with blood in his mouth is GROSS! My hubby’s oral surgery went just fine yesterday, but now he must suffer having a wife that has horrible bedside manners. I have graduated from just giving him ick face to full blown screeching every time he opens his mouth. I can’t tell you how many times I have begged him to stop talking. Maybe today I will have gotten used to it and can be a bit more sensitive. (turning to look at bubby…instantly giving ick face). Nope. I am still a horrible person. I will try again later.

Home Grown gives crime fiction a heart… and the face of a red-haired woman who never set out to be a hero. When Sarabeth Bingham’s father is murdered, shot down on the street in front of his office, the college journalism professor must abandon the world of academia to run the weekly newspaper he left behind. She soon discovers that marijuana-growing has corrupted the idyllic little Kentucky town where she grew up. In the same way selling booze during Prohibition built organized crime empires, the easy riches of dope-growing has bred greed and evil like a fly breeds maggots. The sheriff can’t get a marijuana conviction because the county’s jury pool is tainted. Her own cousin grows weed and his wife and daughter have been gobbled up by the world of drugs. Sarabeth even finds herself falling for a handsome bourbon distillery owner she’s convinced is financing his business with an illegal fortune. But when three children find a pile of dope money in an abandoned building and the growers kidnap them to get it back, Sarabeth finally heeds the words on the plaque that has hung above her father’s desk for as long as she can remember: “Don’t mess with a man who buys ink by the barrel!” In a blazing front page editorial, Sarabeth declares war on the marijuana-growing industry. Now the growers have to shut her up — fast, before she brings the feds down on them. And the meanest dog in the dope-growing junkyard knows just how to do it.
This is fact: in 1989, federal authorities busted what they called the Cornbread Mafia, the largest domestic marijuana-growing operation in American history. They confiscated 182 tons of pot with a street value — in 1989! — of $400 million. Federal marshals arrested 56 men in five states… but they all came from Marion County, Kentucky! Home Grown is not the true story of the rise and fall of the Cornbread Mafia. But it is as real as what actually did happen. Ninie Hammon should know. She ran the newspaper in Marion County at the time.
