My sweet ladies have finally made it through another round of molting. I thought it would never end. They looked so horrible and there were feathers EVERYWHERE! Usually when people are over I like to show the ladies off, but not when they look like naked raptors. I keep my mouth shut and hope no one sees the oven ready looking chickens roaming the backyard. This year not only did the feathers come back even more beautiful, they look about twice the size they were before they started. Did they plump up from the holidays? I know I gave them a few extra treats, but Whoa! You can see the latest pictures of them on my Pinterest page titled “My Sweet Ladies” by clicking here.

The Miting (Old Order Amish Book 1)
Dee Yoder
(119 Reviews)
Genre: Religion & Spirituality
FREE for a limited time
Leah is seventeen and Amish. Like many her age, she has lots of questions, but the temporary flight of freedom known as rumspringen is not the answer for her. She does not desire Englisher fashion, all-night parties, movies, or lots of boyfriends. Leah is seeking to understand her relationship with God, to deepen and broaden her faith by joining a Bible study hosted by an ex-Amish couple. She wants to know why Amish life is the only lifestyle her family accepts, why the church has so many rules, and… most disturbing, how godly men can allow her best friend to be abused in her own home. In the pressure-cooker environment of church and family, Leah is not allowed to ask these questions. When finally she reaches the breaking point, she walks away from the Old Order Amish life that is all she has known. Though adapting amiably to the Englisher world, Leah is tormented with homesickness. Returning to the community, however, entails a journey of pain and sorrow Leah could never have imagined. The miting — shunning — that will now be Leah’s unendurable oppression every day is beyond her most devoted attempts to believe or understand. All the bishop and her family ask is that she abandon her practice of reading the Bible. Is that a price she is willing to pay?

S.A. Molteni
(37 Reviews)
Genre: Science & Math | Politics & Social Sciences
FREE for a limited time
This collection is a small sampling of essays from the longer memoirette – “I.T. Geek to Farm Girk Freak: Leaving High Tech for Greener Pastures”.
S.A. Molteni is well loved for her essays on hobby farming and animal husbandry – from the pain of losing a cherished pet cow and calf during childbirth to the sweetness of spending Christmas Eve in a manger with two Jersey cow babies. In this new collection of short stories, she poignantly and reflectively brings to the surface the highs and lows of living on a hobby farm and the deep connection that a farmer has to her animals. From predatory hawk attacks on her beloved chickens, to a goat with an attitude, to bottle-feeding a calf, along with a fictional tale based on Chicken Little, the narratives give a condensed version of the best times and the worst times during her past five years on a hobby farm.
